The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has said former Niger Delta militant leader, Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, has questions to answer over an alleged case of naira abuse.

This was after a video from Tompolo’s 54th birthday ceremony showed him getting sprayed with N1,000 notes by an unidentified man.

The action contravenes Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act 2007 (as amended), which stipulates that “spraying of, dancing or matching on the naira or any note issued by the bank during social occasions or otherwise howsoever shall constitute an abuse and defacing of the naira or such note and shall be punishable under the law by fines or imprisonment or both.”

After the video went viral on social media, many netizens brought the attention of the EFCC to the alleged naira abuse involving Tompolo.

An X user, @OurFavOnlineDoc, said, “Here is Tompolo mutilating the Naira. I know the eyes of that your eagle will suddenly go blind, but I am bringing this to your attention publicly so the whole world will see you are a shameless agency with double standards.”

Also, one @tonyajah said, “They won’t see it o. They will say he wasn’t the one spraying the money.”

Reacting, the EFCC issued a terse statement on Monday, saying, “Nobody is above the law. Tompolo will have questions to answer!”
