The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authorit (NCAA) has grounded a Rano Air aircraft with registration number 5N-BZY following a mid-flight engine malfunction on June 30, 2025.

The incident occurred during a trip from Abuja to Katsina, prompting the flight crew to deploy emergency procedures.

The aircraft experienced a malfunction in engine 1, resulting in smoke filling the cabin and flight deck.

As an emergency response, Oxygen masks were donned, and safety protocols were initiated for landing. The smoke dissipated before landing, and the pilot safely landed the aircraft without incident.

A rescue aircraft intended to airlift passengers from Sokoto had already boarded Abuja-Katsina passengers, leading to the cancellation of the Sokoto leg due to logistical issues.

The NCAA’s Directorate of Airworthiness instructed that the aircraft remain grounded until the conclusion of investigations into the cause of the malfunction.

The NCAA emphasized its commitment to safety, stating that flights are cancelled at the slightest sign of safety concerns, contributing to Nigeria’s solid aviation safety record compared to more advanced countries.

Engineers are currently examining the aircraft to determine the root cause of the engine issue and smoke

Affected passengers are expected to be accommodated in line with Rano Air’s responsibilities under Nigeria’s consumer protection regulations.

The NCAA will provide a detailed update once the ongoing safety investigation is concluded.
