Newswatch Magazine Co-Founder, Yakubu Mohammed, Is Dead

Co-Founder of the defunct Newswatch magazine, Alhaji Yakubu Mohammed, is dead.

Yakubu’s death comes less than two months after that of another Co-Founder, Dan Agbese, who died on November 17, 2025.

Sources confirmed the development to journalists.
Mohammed launched his memoir: “Beyond Expectations,” on November 4, 2025.
He was said to have been ill for a while.

An official statement was still being expected from the family as at press time.

Mohammed, who had a B.Sc degree, was born on April 4, 1950.
He hailed from Ologba, Dekina in Kogi State. He attended St. Joseph’s Primary School, Ayangba, Kogi State, 1964; Government Secondary School, Okene, 1965-69; University of Lagos, 1972-75; and Glasgow College of Technology, Scotland, United Kingdom, 1978-79.

His journalism career saw him as an Associate Editor with New Nigerian Newspapers, 1976-80; Managing Editor, New Nigerian Newspapers, January to December, 1980; and Deputy Editor, National Concord, 1980-82; Editor, National Concord, 1982-1984.
Mohammed was a Co-founder/Executive Editor, Newswatch Magazine, 1984-86; Managing Editor, Newswatch, 1986-94; and Deputy CEO of Newswatch Communications Limited from 1994.
He was also a Director of Yadara Nigeria Limited and Lastop Limited.
He was a member of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Commonwealth Journalists’ Association (CJA), and Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE).
Mohammed also served as the Pro-Chancellor/Chancellor of the Governing Council of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Kaduna State, with his hobbies including playing tennis, dancing, listening to music, and watching movies.
