Portuguese born, Liverpool soccer star, Diogo Jota,
and his brother, André Silva, died in a car crash in northwestern Spain early on Thursday, when their Lamborghini veered off the road and burst into flames, authorities said.
Evidence at the scene of the crash near the city of Zamora suggests Jota’s car suffered a burst tyre while overtaking, Spanish police said in a statement.
The crash occurred around 00:30 a.m. (2230 GMT).
Jota, 28, had just married his partner of ten years in late June, with whom he had three children. ”
While mourning the death of Jota, his national teammate, football legend Cristiano Ronaldo expressed deep sorrow over the tragic deaths of Jota, and Jota’s younger brother, André Silva.
In a heartfelt message shared on Thursday via instagram, Ronaldo reflected on the shocking nature of the loss, recalling recent moments they spent together.
“Doesn’t make any sense. Just now we were together in the National Team, just now you were married,” Ronaldo wrote.
Extending his condolences to the grieving family, he added, “To your family, to your wife and children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them.”
Ronaldo concluded his message with a solemn farewell: “R.I.P. Diogo and Andre. We will all miss you.”
The deaths of Jota, 28, and André, 25, have sparked an outpouring of grief across the football world, with tributes continuing to flood in from clubs, fans, and fellow players.
