Muslim Cleric Who Saved 262 Christians From Being Attacked Dies At 92

Popular Nigerian Muslim cleric, Imam Abdullahi Abubakar, who saved 262 Christians from being attacked and killed is dead.

He reportedly died at the age of 92.

The cleric came to prominence after sheltering around 262 Christians from armed attackers during deadly 2018 Plateau State violence.

Imam Abubakar left behind a legacy of interfaith peace and bravery, recognized with awards like the U.S. International Religious Freedom Award.

His death which was confirmed by his family, occurred at the Plateau Specialist Hospital in Jos, ten days after being admitted for heart issues.

Imam Abubakar was the Chief Imam of Yelwa, Gindin Akwati.

During the severe communal clashes, Abubakar opened his mosque and home to hundreds of fleeing Christians, hiding them from the attackers.
He refused to hand them over, demonstrating extraordinary compassion and courage, becoming a symbol of religious harmony in Nigeria.

‎Imam Abdullahi dedicated his life to the development and well-being of his people, playing a key leadership role in Yelwa, Gindin Akwati, and the wider Barkin Ladi Local Government Area. His efforts toward fostering peace and protecting lives earned him recognition beyond his immediate community.

‎His passing has created a significant leadership gap, particularly at a time when his wisdom and unifying voice were greatly needed. Community members and leaders have described him as a man of faith, fairness, and compassion, whose influence cut across religious and ethnic boundaries.

‎The death of Imam Abubakar Abdullahi is being mourned by his family, community, and many across Plateau State who benefited from his lifelong commitment to peace and service to humanity.
