Resident doctors in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have commenced a seven-day warning strike on Monday, September 8, 2025.

The resident doctors announced the commencement of the strike via a communique by the association’s president, George Ebong.

Ebong lamented that the health sector in the FCT has been undermined by deep-rooted structural challenges that require immediate and comprehensive intervention.

Ebong stated that doctors in Abuja are being pushed to their limits, often forced to handle responsibilities across multiple departments at once.

Resident doctors, who are medical school graduates training as specialists, dominate the emergency wards of Nigerian hospitals and are crucial to quality healthcare delivery across the country.

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) had, last week, threatened to embark on a nationwide strike, following the failure of the federal government to meet the association’s demands.

The resident doctors gave the federal government and relevant agencies a 10-day ultimatum to meet their demands or face a nationwide strike.

The resident doctors said the decision to issue the ultimatum comes after repeated delays in addressing issues affecting their welfare and the healthcare system at large.
