Abdulrasheed Maina
Emmanuel Ekwe, the media assistant to the former chairman of the now-defunct Pension Reform Task Force, Abdulrasheed Maina, has thrown more light on how his boss slumped.
He said Maina slumped on Tuesday after hitting his head on a staircase while attempting to access his office.
He added that Maina is currently receiving intensive medical care in Abuja.
Ekwe in a statement issued on Wednesday said the fall was triggered by complications arising from an untreated knee injury.
According to the statement, the injury caused Maina to lose his balance, leading to a fall in which his head struck the staircase before medical personnel intervened.
Ekwe said, “Dr Abdulrasheed Maina, former Chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team, slumped on the evening of Tuesday, February 3, 2026, while attempting to access his office premises.
“The incident followed complications from an untreated knee injury, which caused him to lose balance and fall, resulting in his head hitting the staircase.
“Medical personnel present promptly administered first aid, after which they rushed him to a private hospital in Abuja for urgent medical attention.”
The media assistant disclosed that Maina remains under close medical observation, with doctors providing intensive care as they monitor his condition.
“Dr Maina is currently receiving intensive medical care and remains under observation. Following a preliminary medical assessment, one of the attending doctors advised that arrangements for an air ambulance medical evacuation be considered should his condition fail to stabilise within a short period.
“His family and medical team continue to monitor his progress closely.”
Ekwe added that the family has appealed to the public for privacy and prayers as treatment continues.
“The family appeals to the public for prayers, understanding, and respect for their privacy at this critical time. Further updates will be communicated as developments unfold,” the statement read.
Maina is a former senior government official who headed the Pension Reform Task Force before its dissolution.
He was convicted of money laundering and released from prison in February 2025, about four years after he was sentenced to eight years in prison.
According to prison authorities he was released on 25 February 2025 due to good conduct in prison.
He was convicted in November 2021 and sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment for money laundering offences involving N2billion in pension funds.
