The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has confirmed the killing of eight of its personnel and a civilian driver after gunmen ambushed a convoy in Edo State on Friday night.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Corps said the attack occurred at about 10:30 p.m. on September 5, 2025, along the Okpella–Agenebode road.
The convoy was escorting a Chinese worker from BUA Cement Company, Okpella, when the assailants struck. Eight NSCDC personnel from the Critical National Assets and Infrastructure (CNAI) Department and a driver were killed, while the expatriate was abducted.
“Twelve persons were on escort duty during the attack. Sadly, the Chinese national was kidnapped,” the Corps confirmed.
The bodies of the deceased have been deposited in the mortuary, while three survivors are receiving medical care. Among the casualties is Chief Corps Assistant (CCA) Oluwatosin Sunday of the Ondo State Command.
Describing the incident as a devastating loss, the NSCDC expressed condolences to the families of the victims and hailed the bravery of the fallen officers. It also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives, national assets, and infrastructure.
The agency added that joint security operations are underway to rescue the abducted expatriate and apprehend the attackers.
“We call on the public to remain calm as the Corps, in collaboration with sister security agencies, intensifies efforts to rescue the kidnapped victim and bring the perpetrators to justice,” the statement said.
The Corps concluded with prayers for the deceased, saying: “May the souls of our gallant officers rest in peace.”
