Cape Verde’s players celebrating historic 0-0 Draw with Spain
By Our Reporter
This seems to be the surprise of the 2026 FIFA World Cup as Cape Verde held highly rated Spain to a 0-0 goalless draw.
The debutants Cape Verde that shock Spain in their Group H opener are currently the cynosure of all eyes at the world cup
Luis de la Fuente’s side might be many people’s pre-tournament picks for the trophy, but they struggled in front of goal against inspired opponents — who are 61 places below them in FIFA’s rankings.
Its a statement of fact that a 0-0 result and a first World Cup point for Cape Verde will remain indelible in football history for a long timr to come.
Cape Verde were organized defensively in a traditional back five that at times included a midfielder to make it a wall of six defenders. With Lamine Yamal only fit enough to start on the bench, Spain lacked a cutting edge in that one-vs-one dynamic.
Cape Verde were also buoyed by the performance of the experienced goalkeeper Vozinha.
As expected, Spain dominated possession from the outset, but Cape Verde’s superb organisation and unwavering determination frustrated La Roja throughout the contest.
Spain came close to breaking the deadlock in the first half when Ferran Torres rattled the crossbar after being picked out by Marc Cucurella.
The rebound fell kindly to Mikel Oyarzabal, whose instinctive header was brilliantly kept out by veteran goalkeeper Vozinha.
The 40-year-old shot-stopper continued to inspire his side, producing another outstanding save to deny Aymeric Laporte’s powerful header just before the interval.
Despite spending long periods without the ball, Cape Verde occasionally ventured forward, providing welcome relief for their defence and reminding Spain that they posed a threat on the counter-attack.
Fabian Ruiz fired over from distance early in the second half, but Spain struggled to turn their territorial dominance into clear-cut chances as Cape Verde’s resolute defensive structure remained intact.
In a bid to spark his side into life, De la Fuente introduced teenage sensation Lamine Yamal in the 71st minute.
The Barcelona star immediately injected greater pace and unpredictability into Spain’s attacks, yet Cape Verde continued to defend resolutely, limiting the European heavyweights to half-chances.
Oyarzabal had one final opportunity to snatch victory for Spain in the closing stages, but his effort drifted off target as Cabo Verde held firm to secure a sensational point and one of the greatest results in the nation’s football history.
