A United States fighter jet pilot has been rescued from the downed aircraft and another still missing in Iran, in a development that underscores escalating tensions in the ongoing Middle East conflict.
According to U.S. officials, the two-seater F-15 aircraft went down on Friday under circumstances suggesting it was hit by Iranian forces.
American military authorities have since launched an urgent search-and-rescue operation to locate the second crew member.
NBC reports that Iranian state-linked media outlets earlier reported the downing of the aircraft, claiming it was destroyed by an advanced air defense system operated by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Images circulating on Iranian platforms purportedly show wreckage of the jet, although U.S. authorities have yet to publicly confirm those details.
In a controversial move, a regional Iranian official reportedly called on local residents to help capture the pilots, offering a financial reward. Separate reports indicated that business representatives were offering up to $60,000 for information leading to their capture.
Some Iranian broadcasts went further, urging civilians to detain or even shoot at what they described as “enemy” in reference to the downed crew, raising serious concerns about the safety of the missing pilot.
