The presidentbof the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sought for assistance and deeper collaboration with the United Kingdom in addressing terrorism challenges confronting West Africa, emphasising the need for sustained bilateral support to safeguard regional stability.

Speaking at Windsor Castle during an address to King Charles III at his ongoing visits in the United Kingdom, Tinubu highlighted the rising security threats stemming from the Sahel region and outlined Nigeria’s role as a key player in promoting peace and stability in West Africa.

“Our West African region faces complex terrorism challenges with roots in the Sahel. Nigeria carries an enormous responsibility to help safeguard regional stability,” Tinubu said.

He stressed that “in confronting these threats, partnership with the United Kingdom remains essential,” adding that he looked forward to substantive discussions with Keir Starmer on strengthening cooperation in intelligence-sharing, capacity building, and joint operations.

Tinubu’s remarks were delivered before members of the British Royal Family, including Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, as well as distinguished guests and senior officials from both countries.

Tinubu described the occasion as “a profound honour,” reaffirming the “enduring bonds of friendship, history, and shared purpose” between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

He highlighted the deep historical and cultural links that unite both nations, noting that Nigeria and the UK “share a vision of progress and resilience” and remain committed to “building a future rooted in partnership, mutual respect, and common values.”

Tinubu also praised the contributions of the Nigerian diaspora in the UK, particularly in the National Health Service, stating that “Nigerian doctors and nurses play an indispensable role in delivering healthcare.”

On governance and legal traditions, Tinubu acknowledged Britain’s historical influence, noting that “the Magna Carta of 1215 laid the early foundations for the rule of law and the development of parliamentary democracy.”

He added that such ideals continue to inspire Nigeria’s institutions, from its courts to parliamentary and administrative structures.

Despite ongoing security challenges, Tinubu expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, describing the country as “a nation of diverse and vibrant people… determined to realise their full potential.”

He concluded by expressing gratitude for the UK’s historical support during Nigeria’s military dictatorship, emphasizing that the solidarity shown to pro-democracy activists remains “etched in our collective memory.”

“In the spirit of friendship and our shared destiny… to the special bond between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, and to the bright future that we shall build together,” Tinubu said.

His comments come amid condemnation of his visit to the United Kingdom after bomb attack in Maiduguri, Borno State which killed many and injured others.
